San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, a republic of about
61 square kilometres surrounded entirely by Italy, and its castelli (the
singular is castello) are the units its government and its elections are
organised around. They cover the country without a gap, from the plain at
Serravalle in the north to the ridges on the southern border, with Monte Titano
and the old city on it in the middle.

What you are looking at
The nine castelli of today, named the way San Marino names them. The capital is
the Castello di San Marino, which holds the old city on the slopes of Monte
Titano, and the quiz calls it simply San Marino. Serravalle is the largest, the
broad northern castello where the country meets the Italian plain, and
Borgo Maggiore lies just below the capital, in the middle of the map.
Domagnano and Acquaviva sit to the east and west of that centre, and Faetano,
Montegiardino and Fiorentino are the small castelli of the southern edge, with
Chiesanuova in the south-west.
The groups are not an official classification. They split the country into the
four northern castelli and the five southern ones, a way to learn the map a
piece at a time.
How to place one
- Start with the corners. Serravalle is the whole of the north, and
Montegiardino is the small castello pressed against the southern border.
- Find the capital. San Marino is in the centre, around the hill, with
Borgo Maggiore on its north-east side.
- Finish with the small ones. Faetano, Fiorentino and Chiesanuova are the
southern castelli, each against Italy, and are the easiest to mix up.

Worked examples
San MarinoThe capitalSan Marino is the castello of the old city, strung along the ridge of Monte
Titano and sitting in the middle of the country, with Borgo Maggiore directly
below it.
SerravalleThe northSerravalle is the largest castello, the northern end of the country, where the
hills give way to the plain and the road to Rimini.
MontegiardinoThe smallestMontegiardino is the smallest castello, a hilltop village and its land in the
south-east, which makes it the one that takes the most care to tap.
Frequently asked questions
How many castelli does San Marino have?
Nine, and together they cover the whole of the country, so the game has no territory outside them. They have been the same nine since the 1970s.
Does San Marino group its castelli?
Not officially. The two groups here are the northern castelli and the southern ones, and they are only a way to learn the map.
Is the capital a castello?
Yes. The city of San Marino is the seat of the Castello di San Marino, which is why the quiz names it the same, and Borgo Maggiore, below it, is a separate castello.
