Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, so the twelve cantons
are slices of something you could cross in under an hour. They are the tier
above the communes, and they are the right first step before
the hundred communes inside them.

What you are looking at
The twelve cantons, each named for its main town. Clervaux in the far north is the largest and Vianden, a small canton on
the German border around a single castle town, is the smallest. Esch-sur-Alzette
in the south-west holds the most communes of any canton.
The English names are the French ones and the local name is a switch in the
start dialog, so Luxembourg is Lëtzebuerg and Esch-sur-Alzette is Esch-Uelzecht.
The cantons are the communes of Luxembourg Communes
dissolved, so the borders of the two maps match exactly.
The groups are the four electoral constituencies, the way the country sorts its
cantons since the three districts were abolished in 2015.
How to place one
- Start with the capital. Luxembourg canton is the central one, and every
other canton is placed by which side of it it is on.
- Go to the south. Esch-sur-Alzette runs along the French border and
Capellen sits between it and Belgium, the two cantons that make up the
Sud constituency.
- Follow the Moselle. Remich, Grevenmacher and Echternach are the three
cantons along the German border in the east, from the south-east corner up
to the Sûre.
- Finish in the Ardennes. Clervaux, Wiltz, Redange, Diekirch and tiny
Vianden make the north, a block of five that takes the longest to tell apart.

Worked examples
LuxembourgThe capital cantonLuxembourg canton holds the capital and the communes around it, in the middle
of the country. It is the easiest canton to place first, and the one the rest
are described against.
ViandenThe smallest of themVianden is a thin canton on the German border, made of three communes and
named for the castle town on the Our. It is small enough to hide between
Diekirch and Clervaux.
ClervauxThe biggest of themClervaux covers the far north, the Ösling, the part of the country that is
Ardennes rather than farmland. It is the largest canton by area, and it is
where the country's northern tip, Troisvierges, is.
Frequently asked questions
How many cantons does Luxembourg have?
Twelve, and they have stayed the same twelve even though the communes inside them have been merged many times.
Which canton is the biggest?
Clervaux in the north is the largest by area, and Luxembourg canton around the capital is the largest by population.
What happened to the districts?
Luxembourg had three districts above the cantons, Diekirch, Grevenmacher and Luxembourg, until they were abolished in 2015. The four electoral constituencies are what the groups in this quiz use instead.
The tier below this one is Luxembourg Communes, whose
cantons are the groups there. For another small country at this level, see
Montenegro Municipalities.
