The resort (ressort) is the second tier of Suriname, below the ten districts. The
word is Dutch, and means an administrative area rather than a place to stay.
There are 62 of them, from city neighbourhoods a couple of kilometres across to
rainforest areas larger than some countries' provinces.

What you are looking at
The resorts of Suriname, as the national statistics office and the electoral
council use them. They are the units the census counts and the districts are
made of, and they are what a Surinamese address is placed by.
They are very uneven. Sipaliwini has only six, and each is a huge area of forest:
Tapanahony, Kabalebo and Coeroenie are the three largest, and each is bigger than
a whole district on the coast. Paramaribo is the opposite: twelve resorts in a
district of a few hundred square kilometres, which at country scale are specks on
the Suriname river, so zooming in is the way to reach them.
Two names appear twice. There is a Centrum in Paramaribo, the old town, and
another in Brokopondo; and a Welgelegen in Paramaribo and another in Coronie.
The quiz writes the district beside each, so it is clear which you are asked for.
The groups are the districts, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
Each district answers under the same name in
Suriname Districts.
How to place one
- Pick one district and learn it. Coronie has only three, and Nickerie five,
so they are the quickest to finish. Paramaribo has twelve and Wanica seven.
- Start with the big ones in the interior. Tapanahony is in the south east,
Kabalebo in the west, and Coeroenie between them along the southern border.
- Follow the coast. From the Corantijn river in the west, Nieuw Nickerie,
Totness, Groningen, Paramaribo, Nieuw Amsterdam and Albina run in order along
the sea and the rivers to the Marowijne in the east.
- Learn the capital last. The twelve resorts of Paramaribo are small and
close together, with Centrum in the middle, and are easiest to recall as
neighbourhoods along the river.

Worked examples
TapanahonyThe biggest of themTapanahony is the largest resort in Suriname, in the south east of Sipaliwini
between the Tapanahony river and the border with French Guiana. It is bigger
than Paramaribo, Wanica, Para and Commewijne put together many times over.
Centrum (Paramaribo)The old townCentrum is the historic centre of the capital, with the wooden colonial
buildings that earned Paramaribo its World Heritage listing. Brokopondo has a
Centrum too, a very different place in the interior, which is why both carry
their district in the quiz.
AlbinaThe town on the borderAlbina lies on the Marowijne river in Marowijne, across the water from Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni in
French Guiana, and the crossing there is the one between the two countries.
Frequently asked questions
How many resorts does Suriname have?
62, spread over the ten districts.
Why do two of them have the same name?
Centrum and Welgelegen each exist in two districts. The quiz adds the district in brackets, so the answer is clear.
Which district is each resort in?
The quiz groups them by district, so you can drill one district at a time. Each district is its own quiz as well.
The tier above this one is Suriname Districts. For another
country at this level, see Bolivia Departments.
