An Austrian state narrows a round down to a valley or a stretch of the Danube,
and the district is the tier that names a place. There are 94 of them, from the
single district that is Vienna to the twenty-odd that make up Lower Austria, and
the district is what a car's number plate starts with.

What you are looking at
The Bezirke: 79 political districts and 15 statutory cities, which are districts
in their own right. A city and the district around it share a name, so they come
in pairs: Graz and Graz-Umgebung, Linz and Linz-Land, Villach and Villach-Land.
The city is the small shape beside or inside the larger one, and each answers
under its own name. Vienna is the biggest of the cities and a district of one, and Rust,
on the Neusiedler See, is the smallest.
Many of the cities are too small to tap comfortably at the scale of the whole
country. The smallest of each cluster has its tap area widened beyond its shape,
which is why Krems, St. Pölten and Eisenstadt are reachable; zoom in for the rest.
The groups are the states, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Lower
Austria has the most districts, 24, counting its four cities, and Vienna the
fewest. Each state answers under the same name in
Austria States.
The 2013 reform in Styria merged the old districts into fewer, larger ones, so
Murtal, Bruck-Mürzzuschlag, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld and Südoststeiermark are on
the map and Judenburg, Knittelfeld, Mürzzuschlag and Radkersburg are not.
How to place one
- Pick one state and learn it. Burgenland has nine districts and Vorarlberg
four, which makes them the shortest rounds to start on.
- Find the city beside its district. For every pair, the city is the small
shape, and the district wraps around it or sits next to it.
- Follow the valleys in Tyrol. The districts there run along the Inn and
its side valleys, from Landeck in the west to Kufstein on the German border.
- Treat Lower Austria as a ring. Its districts circle Vienna, with the
Danube running through the middle.

Worked examples
RustThe smallest of themRust is a town of about two thousand people on the western shore of the
Neusiedler See, and a statutory city, which makes it a district. It is the
smallest answer on the map and the one that most needs a tap area.
LiezenThe biggest of themLiezen is the largest district in Austria, in the north of Styria, and it
holds the Dachstein and much of the Enns valley. It is larger than Vorarlberg.
LienzThe district with no neighbour in its own stateLienz is East Tyrol, and the district is all of it. It is cut off from the
rest of Tyrol, so the districts around it belong to Salzburg and Carinthia, and
the border to the south is Italy's.
Frequently asked questions
How many districts does Austria have?
94: 79 political districts and 15 statutory cities. Vienna counts as a single district.
What is a statutory city?
A city with the powers of a district. It is its own answer on the map, separate from the district around it, which is why Graz and Graz-Umgebung are two.
Why are the Styrian districts so large?
The 2013 reform merged the old districts of Styria into fewer, and the new ones were given new names where the old ones no longer applied.
The tier above this one is Austria States. For another
country at this level, see Germany Districts.
