The municipality (municipio) is the second tier of Cuba, between the provinces
and the towns, and the unit a Cuban will use to say where in a province a place
is. There are 168 of them, from the handful of tiny ones that make up central
Havana to the swamp of Ciénaga de Zapata.
The municipalities of Cuba. Most are named for their main town, and a few have
names that look out of place: Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela are three
municipalities in Ciego de Ávila, and Primero de Enero is named for the first
of January 1959.
Two municipalities are called San Luis, one in Pinar del Río and one in
Santiago de Cuba, and they are told apart in brackets. The Isle of Youth is a
special municipality with no province above it, so it is both a municipality
and its own group.
The map is very uneven. Havana alone packs fifteen into a few hundred square
kilometres, and the smallest, Centro Habana, is about four square kilometres,
so the smallest have a tap area wider than their outline and zooming in is the
way to reach the rest. Beyond the capital the municipalities are broad and even,
and Ciénaga de Zapata, the swamp on the south coast, is the largest.
The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
Each province answers under the same name in Cuba Provinces.
