A Czech region narrows a round down to a stretch of the country, and the district
is the tier that names a town. There are 77 of them: the 76 okresy and Prague,
from the three that make up Karlovy Vary to the twelve around the capital in
Central Bohemia.

What you are looking at
The okresy, which are the tier between a region and a municipality. They have no
government of their own any more, but they are still what a licence plate, a
statistical table and a postal address are sorted by, and each is named for its
main town.
Names are written in Czech, and the districts of the four biggest cities take
the form the language gives them: a ring of countryside called the "venkov" or
"sever", "jih", "východ", "západ" around a "město", the city itself. Brno-město
is the city and Brno-venkov the district around it, and Plzeň, Ostrava and Prague
work the same way. Prague is the only one of them that is a region as well.
The cities are small shapes wrapped by their rings, so Prague and the
statutory-city districts take a tap area wider than their outline.
The groups are the regions. Central Bohemia has the most districts, twelve, and
Prague has one. Each region answers under the same name in
Czechia Regions.
How to place one
- Pick one region and learn it. Karlovy Vary has three and Central Bohemia
twelve, which makes them the shortest and longest rounds to start on.
- Find the city and its ring. Brno-město sits inside Brno-venkov, and
Plzeň-město is the middle of Plzeň-sever and Plzeň-jih.
- Follow the borders. Many district names are the same as a neighbour's with
a compass point added, so the compass point is the clue to where it lies.
- Use the regions as a map of the whole. Moravia is the eastern third, and
its districts fill the south east from Znojmo to Zlín.

Worked examples
PragueThe capital that is a district, a city and a regionPrague is a single district as well as a region and a city, so it answers under
the same name in Czechia Regions. Praha-východ and
Praha-západ are the two districts of Central Bohemia on either side of it.
Brno-venkovA ring around a cityBrno-venkov is the countryside district around Brno-město, the second city of
the country. The city itself is the small shape in the middle, so it is hard to
hit without the tap area.
Frequently asked questions
How many districts does Czechia have?
76 okresy, plus Prague, which is a district of its own. That makes 77 on the map.
What is the difference between a district and a region?
A region is made up of districts, which are made up of municipalities. The district has no government of its own, but it is the tier that appears in statistics and addresses.
Why are some districts named for the same town?
A statutory city gets a district of its own, and the countryside around it is a second one: Brno-město and Brno-venkov, or Plzeň-město with Plzeň-sever and Plzeň-jih.
The tier above this one is Czechia Regions. For another
country at this level, see Austria Districts.
