Dominica is a small, mountainous island in the Lesser Antilles, between
Guadeloupe and Martinique, and it is divided into ten parishes. Each is named
for a saint, which makes them easy to mix up and worth learning on a map. Not to
be confused with the Dominican Republic, which is a different country on a
different island.

What you are looking at
The ten parishes of today, named as Dominica names them, all of them saints.
The island is long and narrow, so the parishes are slices of it. Most run from
the Caribbean coast on the west up to the central mountain spine, and a few
reach the Atlantic side. Roseau, the capital, lies in the south-west, and the
parishes around it are some of the smallest on the map.
The groups are not an official classification. They are three stretches of the
island, taken from north to south, a way to learn the map a piece at a time.
How to place one
- Start with the size. The parishes of the north and the east are broad,
and those in the south-west are small slivers. Saint Luke and Saint Mark
are the smallest, and they sit together at the bottom of the island.
- Work down the west coast. The parishes line up along the Caribbean side
one after another, so once you know the first, the rest follow in order.
- Then the east. The parishes on the Atlantic side are the broad ones, much
wider than those on the west.

Worked examples
Saint AndrewThe north-eastSaint Andrew is the largest parish, filling the whole north-east corner of the
island, with the airport at Douglas-Charles on its coast.
Saint GeorgeThe capitalSaint George holds Roseau, the capital, on the Caribbean coast, in a parish
far smaller than the broad ones of the north.
Saint LukeThe smallestSaint Luke is a narrow sliver of coast in the south-west, squeezed between its
neighbours, and is the parish most often missed.
Frequently asked questions
How many parishes does Dominica have?
Ten, and together they cover the whole island, so the game has no territory outside them.
Does Dominica group its parishes?
Not officially. The three groups here are stretches of the island from north to south, and they are only a way to learn the map.
Is Dominica the same as the Dominican Republic?
No. Dominica is a small island nation in the Lesser Antilles, while the Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
