The municipality (municipio) is the second tier of El Salvador, below the 14
departments. Since the reform of 2024 there are 44 of them, where there used to
be 262, and each is named for its department and a compass point, as in
Ahuachapán Norte or San Miguel Oeste.

What you are looking at
The 44 municipalities of El Salvador as they have been since 2024. The reform
merged the old municipalities into larger ones, and the old ones live on as the
districts (distritos) inside them, which this map does not draw. Almost every
name is the department plus a direction, so the names tell you where in the
department the municipality is: Norte and Sur, Este and Oeste, Centro for the
middle, and Costa for the one on the coast in La Libertad.
That makes the names easy to learn once the departments are known, and easy to
mix up before: the compass point is the second thing to learn, after the
department.
The municipalities are uneven. San Salvador Centro and Ahuachapán Norte are
tight clusters near the capital and the western border, while La Unión Norte
and San Miguel Centro each cover a thousand square kilometres. The reservoir of
Cerrón Grande and the lakes Ilopango, Guija and Coatepeque are water, and are
not on the map as municipalities. The groups are the departments, so the game
lets you drill them one at a time. Each department answers under the same name
in El Salvador Departments.
How to place one
- Pick one department and learn it. Cabañas, Cuscatlán, Morazán, La Unión
and San Vicente have only two each and are the quickest to finish. La
Libertad has six, the longest.
- Use the compass in the name. Norte is towards Honduras, Sur is towards the
Pacific, and Este and Oeste follow the country's long east to west axis.
- Start from the capital. San Salvador has five, and its suburbs are the
ones a road sign names.
- Treat the east as large. San Miguel and Usulután have big
municipalities, so they are the quickest to place.
