The district (raion) is the second tier of Kyrgyzstan, below the seven regions,
and the unit a place is usually given in: a town, then its district, then its
region. There are 40 of them, joined on this map by the 13 towns that are run
apart from the district around them, and by the capital and Osh, which have no
districts of their own.

What you are looking at
The 55 areas the country is made of below its regions. Forty are the rural
districts, usually named for their chief town. Thirteen are towns of regional
significance, such as Karakol, Naryn and Talas, which are drawn as areas of
their own inside a district and carry "(city)" in their name so they are not
confused with it. Bishkek and Osh city are the last two, and sit with the region
around them for grouping.
Many names exist twice: Naryn is a region, a district and a town, and Talas,
Batken, Issyk-Kul and Chui are each a region and a district too. The quiz
always means the district, and its group tells you which region it is in.
The towns are the hard part. Several are no wider than a few kilometres, so the
game gives them tap areas, and zooming in is the way to reach the ones packed
together in the south west. Lake Issyk-Kul and Chatyr-Kol are gaps in the map,
since the boundaries stop at the shore.
The start dialog can switch every name to the Kyrgyz written in Cyrillic, which
is how a road sign in the country writes it.
The groups are the regions, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each
region answers under the same name in Kyrgyzstan Regions.
How to place one
- Pick one region and learn it. Talas has only five districts and Naryn and
Batken six, so they are the quickest to finish; Jalal-Abad has thirteen.
- Start with the big ones. Ak-Bashy, Jeti-Oguz and Ton are the wide
districts of the high interior, far larger than any in the valleys.
- Follow the valleys. The Chui districts run in strips north from the
capital to the Kazakh border, and those round the Fergana valley are small
and crowded.
- Look for the towns last. Each of the 13 towns sits inside or beside the
district it is named for, so find the district first.

Worked examples
Jeti-OguzA big one by the lakeJeti-Oguz is one of the largest districts, on the south shore of Lake
Issyk-Kul and running up into the mountains behind it, with the Seven Bulls
rock formation for its name.
Kara-Kul (city)The smallest of themKara-Kul is a hydropower town on the Naryn river, in Jalal-Abad Region, and the
smallest area on the map by a wide margin. It is tiny enough that it needs a
tap area to be answerable at all.
MoscowThe name that surprisesMoscow is a district of Chui Region, on the Kazakh border just west of
Bishkek. It is one of the strips that runs north from the capital to the border.

Which region is each district in?
The quiz groups them by region, so you can drill one region at a time. Each region is its own quiz as well.
The tier above this one is Kyrgyzstan Regions. For
another country at this level, see Kazakhstan Districts.
