The district is the second tier of Uzbekistan, between the fourteen regions and the neighbourhood councils below them, and the unit that names most of the towns on a road sign. The quiz has 199 of them: the rural districts (tuman) and the cities that sit outside them, from the huge desert districts of Karakalpakstan to the city councils of the Fergana Valley, some no wider than a few kilometres.
The districts and cities of Uzbekistan, as the boundary file draws them. Uzbekistan gives a city of regional importance its own outline, separate from the district that surrounds it, so a name is often two answers: Bukhara city and Bukhara District, Samarkand city and Samarkand District, and a dozen more. The quiz writes the district with the word "District" and the city with the word "city", so the two never collide.
Several names are spelled the Russian way, as most maps of the country still do: Kattakurgan for Kattaqo'rg'on, Dzhizak for Jizzakh, Gallyaaral for Gallaorol. The quiz keeps the spelling of the source. Tashkent has two answers too: the city is a region of its own in Uzbekistan Regions, and its districts, Yunusabad, Chilanzar, Mirabad and the rest, are grouped under Tashkent City here, while Tashkent District belongs to Tashkent Region.
The districts are very uneven. In the north west the districts of Karakalpakstan are the largest in the country, and Kungrad and Muynak each cover tens of thousands of square kilometres of desert. In the Fergana Valley and round Tashkent the opposite holds: cities and districts are packed so tightly that the smallest have a tap area wider than their outline, and zooming in is the way to reach them.
The boundary file has 199 units against roughly 205 in the country today, so a few districts created recently are missing from the map. The fourteen regions are exactly the current ones.
Kungrad is the largest district in the quiz, in the north west of Karakalpakstan on the Ustyurt plateau. It is mostly empty desert, with the town of Kungrad on the railway to Kazakhstan.
Shirin is a small town in Syrdarya region, a patch of land only a few hundred metres across on the map. It is the smallest unit in the quiz and needs a tap area, so zoom in on the Syrdarya valley south of Gulistan to reach it.
Bukhara city is the old Silk Road town on its own small outline in the middle of Bukhara District. Both are answers, and the difference between them is the hardest thing about this quiz.
About 205: some 175 districts and 31 cities of regional subordination. The quiz has the 199 that the boundary file draws.
A city of regional importance has its own outline apart from the district around it, so there is a Bukhara city and a Bukhara District, and likewise for Samarkand, Andijan and others.
The quiz groups them by region, so you can drill one region at a time. Each region is its own quiz as well.
The tier above this one is Uzbekistan Regions. For another country at this level, see Kazakhstan Districts.
