The district is the second tier of Yemen, between the 22 governorates and the
sub-districts, and the unit a Yemeni uses to say where in a governorate
something is. There are 333 of them on this map, from a few square kilometres
in the old city of Sana'a to a stretch of desert bigger than some countries.
The districts (mudiriyah) of Yemen: 323 across the 21 governorates, and the ten
districts of the capital Sana'a City, which stand in for them there. Many are
named for their main town, and a governorate capital is usually the district of
the same name, as with Ibb and Hajjah.
Two names are borne by two districts. Az Zahir is a district in Al Bayda' and
another in Al Jawf, and carries its governorate in brackets so the two can be
told apart. The source also draws the parts of Hamdan and of Sanhan wa Bani
Bahlul that lie inside the capital's boundary as features of their own, and
this map joins them back to the districts they belong to.
The districts are very uneven. The highlands are packed with small ones, and
the districts of Sana'a City and Aden are a few square kilometres each, so the
smallest have a tap area wider than their outline and zooming in is the way to
reach the rest. Out in Hadramaut and Al Jawf the opposite holds: one district
can be larger than a whole governorate in the west.
The groups are the governorates, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
