The province (provincia) is the second tier of Bolivia, between the nine
departments and the municipalities, and the unit a Bolivian will use to say
where in a department a place is. There are 112 of them, from the compact
provinces of the Cochabamba valley to the vast plains of Santa Cruz and Beni.

The provinces of Bolivia. Many are named for the heroes of the independence
wars, so the map is a roll call of generals and presidents: Ingavi, Aroma,
Ballivián, Warnes and Campero. Others are named for the geography
they hold, the Yungas and the Lípez, the Chaco and the Cordillera.
Four departments have a province called Cercado, since that is what the
province of a capital is called, and they are told apart in brackets: Cercado in
Beni is Trinidad's, Cercado in Cochabamba is the city of Cochabamba's, and so on.
The provinces are very uneven. Cochabamba packs sixteen into its valley, and
the smallest, Germán Jordán, covers under 200 square kilometres, so the
smallest have a tap area wider than their outline and zooming in is the way to
reach the rest. In the east the opposite holds: Cordillera in Santa Cruz is the
largest province in the country, and Velasco and Yacuma are nearly as big.
The groups are the departments, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
Each department answers under the same name in
Bolivia Departments.
