The district (srok) is the second tier of Cambodia, between the 25 provinces and the communes, and the unit that names most of the towns on a road sign. The quiz counts the 197 that the boundary file draws: the districts proper, the municipalities (krong) that are cut out of them, and the khans of Phnom Penh.
The districts of Cambodia. Each province has between two and fourteen, and the provincial capital is usually a district of its own with the same name: Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampot, Pursat and Kratié are all both a province and one of the districts inside it.
Phnom Penh is split into khans instead, twelve of them in this map, packed into a small area on the Tonlé Sap and Mekong. Round it, in Kandal, the districts are small too, and the smallest have a tap area wider than their outline, so zooming in is the way to reach them.
The north east is the opposite. Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri and Preah Vihear hold districts far larger than anything in the plains, with few towns between them.
Two districts share a name: Samraong, in Takeo and in Oddar Meanchey. The quiz puts the province after each in brackets.
The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each province answers under the same name in Cambodia Provinces.
Ban Lung is the capital of Ratanakiri, in the far north east. It is a small district in a province of large ones, and a good anchor for the highlands.
Ta Khmau is the municipality just south of Phnom Penh on the Bassac river, and the capital of Kandal. It is small enough to need a tap area on the map.
Samraong in Takeo is one of two districts called Samraong, the other being the capital of Oddar Meanchey on the Thai border. The quiz tells them apart by province, and so should you.
This quiz draws 197, counting districts, municipalities and Phnom Penh's khans, spread over the 25 provinces.
Khmer has no single English spelling. The names here follow the boundary file's romanisation, with a few changed to the form a map in English uses, such as Koh Kong for Kaoh Kong.
