Equatorial Guinea is two pieces of land a long way apart: Río Muni, a square of
rainforest on the African mainland, and a handful of islands in the Gulf of
Guinea, of which Bioko holds the capital. Djibloho, the newest province, was cut
out of the mainland in 2017, so a map from before then shows seven. This game
draws the eight of today.

What you are looking at
The eight provinces. Five are on the mainland, in Río Muni, and three are
islands: Bioko Norte and Bioko Sur share Bioko, and Annobón is a small island far
to the south west, nearer the equator than anything else the country owns. The
game moves Annobón up into the empty sea west of the coast, behind two lines, so
the whole country fits on one screen. Where it is drawn is not where it is.
How to place one
- Split the country in two first. The mainland is the big square on the
right, and Bioko is the island off the top left of it.
- On the mainland, start from the coast. Litoral is the only province on
the sea, and Kié-Ntem is the one in the north east corner.
- Then the middle. Centro Sur and Wele-Nzas fill the interior, with
Wele-Nzas to the east.
- Leave the small ones for last. Djibloho is a small enclave between
Centro Sur and Wele-Nzas, and Annobón sits alone behind its lines.
Every province, by region
- Río Muni (Continental)5 provinces
- Centro Sur, Djibloho, Kié-Ntem, Litoral, Wele-Nzas
- Islands (Insular)3 provinces
- Annobón, Bioko Norte, Bioko Sur
Worked examples
DjiblohoThe newest of themDjibloho was created in 2017 around Oyala, a planned town the government is
building as a new capital. It is a small province in the middle of the
mainland, between Centro Sur and Wele-Nzas.
AnnobónThe smallest of themAnnobón is a volcanic island of about 17 square kilometres, roughly 600
kilometres from the rest of the country. It is drawn in the sea west of the
coast, and the game gives it a tap area, since it is only a few pixels wide.
Frequently asked questions
How many provinces does Equatorial Guinea have?
Eight. Djibloho was split from Centro Sur and Wele-Nzas in 2017, so older maps show seven.
Why is Annobón drawn next to Bioko?
It is really about 600 kilometres south west of Bioko. Drawn where it is, the mainland would be a small corner of the map, so the game moves it into the empty sea west of the coast and fences it off with two lines.
