The department is the second tier of Gabon, between the nine provinces and the
cantons and communes below. There are 49 of them, from Libreville, which is a
department of its own, to the huge forest departments of the interior.

What you are looking at
The departments of Gabon. They are the working subdivision of the provinces, each
with a prefecture town of its own, and the borders on this map are the ones the
quiz shares with Gabon Provinces: a province here is exactly
its departments added together.
They are very uneven. Haut-Ogooué has the most, eleven, packed into the south
east corner round Franceville, and Estuaire has five, one of them Libreville. At
the other end Moyen-Ogooué has two, and the departments of the interior, such as
Tsamba-Magotsi in Ngounié, cover thousands of square kilometres of forest with few
roads. Libreville is under two hundred square kilometres, the smallest by far,
and a tap area makes it reachable.
Most names are French renderings of local ones, with the accents the government
writes: Zadié, Lopé, Ogooué-Létili. The map's source writes every acute accent
as a grave one, and the quiz restores them.
The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each
province answers under the same name in Gabon Provinces.
How to place one
- Pick one province and learn it. Moyen-Ogooué has two and Ogooué-Maritime
three, so they are the quickest to finish. Haut-Ogooué has eleven and
Ngounié nine.
- Start with the coast. Komo-Océan, Libreville and Komo-Mondah are the
departments of Estuaire on the water, and Bendjé, Etimboué and Ndougou follow
the coast south.
- Read the north as a stack. Ntem, Haut-Ntem and Woleu fill Woleu-Ntem from
the Cameroon border down, with Okano and Haut-Komo below them, and the
Ogooué-Ivindo departments Zadié, Ivindo, Mvoung and Lopé to the east.
- Finish in the south east. Haut-Ogooué is a crowd of small departments on
the Congo border, with Mpassa the one round Franceville.

Worked examples
LibrevilleThe capital that is a departmentLibreville is the capital and the biggest city, and it counts as a department
of its own inside Estuaire. It is tiny on the map, a small shape on the north
side of the estuary, so it is the one you will most often reach for with a tap
area.
Tsamba-MagotsiThe biggest of themTsamba-Magotsi, in Ngounié, is the largest department in Gabon, about nine and
a half thousand square kilometres of forest and savannah in the south west.
Almost every department round it is easier to find than it is.
BendjéThe oil portBendjé is the department of Port-Gentil, the second city, on a sandy peninsula
at the mouth of the Ogooué. It is in Ogooué-Maritime, with no road to the
capital, and the oil that Gabon lives on is pumped from the sea off its coast.
Frequently asked questions
How many departments does Gabon have?
49, spread over the nine provinces. Libreville is counted as one of the five in Estuaire.
Why do some names look different from other maps?
The source writes every acute accent as a grave one (Zadiè, Ogoouè) and a few names have more than one spelling. The quiz uses the French ones with the acute: Zadié, Lopé, Ogooué-Létili.
Which province is each department in?
The quiz groups them by province, so you can drill one province at a time. Each province is its own quiz as well.
The tier above this one is Gabon Provinces. For another
country at this level, see Cameroon Departments.
