Zambia Districts

The district is the second tier of Zambia, between the ten provinces and the wards, and the unit local government runs from. There are 116 of them, from the city districts of the Copperbelt to the wide bush districts of the north west.

What you are looking at

The 116 districts of Zambia, including the ones created in the most recent round of new districts. Districts keep being split, so an older map shows fewer, and a map with about 100 is from before the latest changes.

Several districts carry the name of the town that heads them: Kitwe, Ndola, Kabwe, Livingstone, Mongu and Kasama are worth knowing as places as well. The Copperbelt holds a string of them, Kitwe, Ndola, Luanshya, Chingola, Mufulira and Kalulushi, packed close together on the Congolese border.

The districts are uneven. The city districts of Lusaka, Livingstone, Kitwe, Luanshya and Ndola are the smallest on the map, each under a thousand square kilometres, while the largest, in the North-Western province, are twenty times that.

The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each province answers under the same name in Zambia Provinces.

How to place one

Pick one province and learn it. Lusaka has only seven and is the quickest to finish; Western has sixteen, the most of any.
Start on the Copperbelt. Its ten districts are the densest cluster on the map, so it is the easiest block to anchor the rest on.
Follow the Zambezi. The river runs through the districts of the west and then along the southern border, from Zambezi and Kalabo down to Livingstone and Kazungula.
Follow Lake Kariba. Siavonga, Gwembe and Sinazongwe run along the lake on the Zimbabwean border.

Kasempa

The biggest of them

Kasempa is the largest district on the map, in the North-Western province. It is forest and savannah with few towns, which is why one district covers so much ground.

Lusaka

The capital

Lusaka is the smallest district, the city itself, with the districts of the surrounding province on every side.

Livingstone

The one at the Falls

Livingstone is the town on the Zambezi next to Victoria Falls, at the southern tip of the country, and one of the few small districts outside the Copperbelt and the capital.
