South Africa is cut into 52 districts and metropolitan municipalities, the tier
between the nine provinces and the local municipalities. It is the tier a
municipal election, a load shedding schedule or a drought declaration names, and
the smallest one that fits on a single screen. Learn the provinces first, then
this map for when a round puts you somewhere the province alone does not settle.

What you are looking at
Forty-four of the 52 are district municipalities, each a ring of local
municipalities that share services, and eight are metropolitan municipalities,
single cities that do the job of a district alone: Cape Town, Johannesburg,
Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and Mangaung.
The metros are small and the districts around them are not, so the map is a few
large Karoo shapes in the west and a crowd in the east, with Gauteng packed into
the middle.
The sizes are lopsided. Namakwa and the Karoo districts of the Northern Cape
are larger than some provinces, while Gauteng holds five districts in an area
smaller than any of them. Names change as well: the old Cacadu is now Sarah
Baartman, Uthungulu is King Cetshwayo and Sisonke is Harry Gwala, and the map
uses the current names.
The groups are the nine provinces, so the game lets you drill one at a time, and
each province answers under the same name in
South Africa Provinces.
How to place one
- Place the province first. Every district sits in exactly one, and no
province has more than eleven.
- Count the metros. Each of the eight is a single city, so a district named
after a city is a small shape around it.
- Follow the coast in the east. KwaZulu-Natal's eleven districts run in a
row from the Eastern Cape border up to Eswatini.
- Treat the west as a few big blocks. Namakwa, Pixley ka Seme and ZF Mgcawu
cover most of the Northern Cape.

Worked examples
NamakwaThe biggest shape on the mapNamakwa is the whole north west corner of the Northern Cape, from the Atlantic
to the Orange River, and larger than Gauteng several times over. Dry scrub,
quiver trees and wide silence are the clue.
City of JohannesburgA city, not a regionJohannesburg is a metropolitan municipality, so it is a small shape pinned
between Tshwane to the north, Ekurhuleni to the east and the West Rand to the
west. Mine dumps and toll gantries give it away.
WaterbergThe bushveld north of TshwaneWaterberg is the largest district in Limpopo, a plateau of bushveld, game
farms and platinum mines that reaches to the Botswana border.
Frequently asked questions
How many districts does South Africa have?
52: 44 district municipalities and eight metropolitan municipalities. Together they cover the whole country, with the local municipalities beneath them.
What is a metropolitan municipality?
A city that is its own district. The eight are Cape Town, Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and Mangaung, and they run the services a district would run for a ring of towns.
Which province has the most districts?
KwaZulu-Natal, with eleven including the eThekwini metro. The Eastern Cape follows with eight, and the Western Cape has six.
Why are some district names different from older maps?
Several were renamed: Cacadu became Sarah Baartman, Uthungulu became King Cetshwayo and Sisonke became Harry Gwala. The game uses the current names.
The same country in other cuts: South Africa Provinces
and South Africa Dialing Codes.
