The district is the tier Tanzania is run by: each of the 31 regions is cut into a handful of councils, and the council is what a road sign, a bus or a ward office names. This quiz draws 194 of them, from the vast rural districts of the south to the town councils inside the cities.
The district councils of Tanzania. A region has rural district councils and, inside or beside them, urban ones: municipal councils, town councils and the city councils of the largest towns. Many urban councils share a name with the rural district around them, so Arusha, Mbeya, Iringa and Singida are each two answers, the rural district and the municipal council that carries the town. The quiz tells them apart as the council does: the rural one by the plain name, the urban one with Municipal, Town or Urban after it.
The list is the current one, which changes every few years as councils are split. Kigamboni and Ubungo were cut out of Dar es Salaam, Chalinze out of Bagamoyo, and a run of town councils, among them Ifakara, Mbulu, Nanyamba and Geita, out of the districts around them. A map older than that has fewer.
Zanzibar is drawn at the same tier. Unguja has Mjini, Magharibi, Kati, Kusini, Kaskazini A and Kaskazini B, and Pemba has Wete, Micheweni, Chake Chake and Mkoani. Magharibi is one answer here although the island now splits it into A and B, because the source draws it as one. Mafia, the island district off the Rufiji delta, is the other offshore answer.
The districts are very uneven. Liwale and Sikonge are each larger than many countries' regions, with much of the Selous and Ugalla wilderness inside them, while the smallest councils, in Zanzibar Town and the cities, are a few dozen square kilometres. The smallest get a tap area, and zooming in is the way to reach them.
The groups are the regions, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each region answers under the same name in Tanzania Regions.
Ngorongoro is the district in Arusha region that holds the Ngorongoro Crater and the south of the Serengeti plains. It is the one that most visitors have heard of, and a good anchor for the northern safari circuit.
Kigamboni was cut out of Temeke in 2015, across the harbour from the centre of Dar es Salaam, so a map older than that has three Dar es Salaam districts where there are now five.
Mafia is an island district in Pwani region, in the Indian Ocean off the mouth of the Rufiji. It is reached by boat or by air.
The quiz draws 194 councils. The exact count depends on what is counted: the government reports districts and councils separately, and new town councils are created every few years.
Because the rural district council and the municipal council of the town are different bodies with different borders. The quiz names the urban ones with Municipal, Town or Urban.
The quiz groups them by region, so you can drill one region at a time. Each region is its own quiz as well.
