The prefecture is the second tier of Togo, between the five regions and the
cantons, and the unit most Togolese maps are drawn in. There are 39 of them,
from the small ones around Lomé on the coast to the wide ones of the north.

What you are looking at
The 39 prefectures of Togo, as the current map draws them. The count has grown
over the years as large prefectures were split, especially around the capital
and in the north, so an older map that shows fewer is from before those
changes, and Agoè-Nyivé, Kpendjal-Ouest and Oti-Sud are the names that give it
away.
Several prefectures are named for a river: Haho, Ogou, Mo, Oti, and the Mono
ones (Est-Mono, Moyen-Mono, Bas-Mono) along the river that forms part of the
border with Benin. Golfe is the prefecture of Lomé, and next
to it the Lacs prefecture holds Lake Togo.
The prefectures are uneven. The south is crowded with small ones, many of them
in Plateaux, which has twelve, the most of any region. The north is the
opposite: Oti, Tône and Kpendjal are wide and thinly settled by Togolese
standards.
The groups are the regions, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each
region answers under the same name in Togo Regions.
How to place one
- Pick one region and learn it. Centrale has only five and is the quickest
to finish; Plateaux has twelve, the most of any.
- Start on the coast. Golfe and Agoè-Nyivé are the two around Lomé, with
Lacs, Vo, Yoto and Zio running east along the shore and inland.
- Follow the Ghanaian border. Kloto, Agou, Danyi and Akébou sit on the hills
along the western edge of Plateaux.
- Read the north as large blocks. Oti, Tône and Kpendjal fill the top of the
country, with Kozah and Doufelgou around the city of Kara.

Worked examples
GolfeThe capitalGolfe is the prefecture of Lomé, the capital, in the south west corner of Togo
against the Ghanaian border. It is small enough that on a phone it needs a
careful tap.
AgouThe one with the mountainAgou, in the Plateaux region, takes its name from Mount Agou, the highest
point in Togo.
ToneThe far northTône is a northern prefecture in the Savanes region, with the town of Dapaong.
It is among the widest on the map, and a good contrast with the crowded south.
