What you are looking at
The zones of Ethiopia, the second tier of the country, as OCHA draws them. Most
are named for a people or a place: Gamo, Wolayita, Guraghe, Borena. Oromia and
Amhara use older names for the same idea (East Hararge, North Gondar), while the
Somali region uses names such as Fafan and Shabelle that are mostly rivers.
A few are not zones in the usual sense. The file includes special woredas (Alle,
Kebena, Mareko, Tembaro, Itang, Mao-Komo), towns administered on their own
(Hawassa, Bahir Dar, Sheger City) and the two halves of Dire Dawa. Where the
source calls two zones in different regions by the same word, such as Central,
Eastern and Southern in both Tigray and Sidama, the game adds the region so
that each answer has a name of its own. The zones of Afar are numbered from 1 to
6 and are given with their names.
The three disputed areas are the land between Tigray and Amhara in the
north that both claim. They are drawn as part of Ethiopia and named Disputed
area 1, 2 and 3, not given to either side.
The map is uneven. The Rift Valley and the highlands are carved fine, while the
south east, in the Somali region, is carved coarsely, so a few zones there cover
as much ground as a small country.
The groups are the regions, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each
region answers under the same name in Ethiopia Regions.
How to place one
- Pick one region and learn it. Harari and Addis Ababa are a single zone
each, and Dire Dawa has two.
- Do Somali last. Its eleven zones are huge, so they are quick to place
once you know the shape of the region.
- Follow the Rift. In Oromia, the zones along the Rift Valley are the ones
people mistake for each other.
- Treat the south as a puzzle. The Southern Nations zones are small and
close together, and are the ones that moved between regions in 2020 to 2023.

Worked examples
DooloThe biggest of themDoolo is the largest zone, on the southern border with Somalia and Kenya in the
Somali region.
Dire Dawa (urban)The smallest of themThe urban part of Dire Dawa is under a hundred square kilometres. It is small
enough to need a tap area on the map.
Disputed area 1Land that nobody has settledThe first disputed area is the largest of the three, in the north west, where
Tigray and Amhara meet. The game draws it without taking a side.
Frequently asked questions
How many zones does Ethiopia have?
107 on this map, counting special woredas and city administrations that are treated as zones, and the three disputed areas.
Why are some zones called Central, Eastern and Southern?
Tigray and Sidama each use those words for their zones. The game puts the region after or before them, as in Central Tigray, so that each answer is unique.
Why are there disputed areas?
The source draws three areas between Tigray and Amhara that are claimed by both and does not assign them. They are part of Ethiopia on this map.
The tier above this one is Ethiopia Regions. For another
country at this level, see Madagascar Districts.
