Ethiopia is a country of 1.1 million square kilometres, and its regions are
the answer to most questions of where something is: Oromia for the great
highland middle, Afar for the hot lowlands of the north east, Somali for the
whole of the south east. The list has been redrawn several times since 2020, so
a map that is more than a few years old is missing regions and draws the old
Southern Nations region where there are now four.

What you are looking at
The regions (kilil) of Ethiopia, the first tier of the country: twelve regions
and two chartered cities, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa. Harari, around the walled
city of Harar, is the smallest of them and sits inside Oromia.
The south is the part that changed. Sidama became a region in 2020. South West
Ethiopia followed in 2021, and in 2023 what was left of the Southern Nations
region split into Central Ethiopia and South Ethiopia. The four make up the
"South" group, which is how the game lets you learn the new ones together.
The map also draws three disputed areas in the north, between Tigray and
Amhara. Both regions claim them and the source does not give them to either, so
the game does not either: they are one answer here, three in
Ethiopia Zones, and they are drawn as part of Ethiopia. They
are not a region.
The regions are the Ethiopia Zones grouped, so the borders of
the two maps match exactly.
How to place one
- Start with the two giants. Oromia wraps the capital and runs from the
Kenyan border to the north; Somali fills the south east. Together they are
more than half the country.
- Find the lowlands. Afar is the triangle in the north east, along the
Eritrean and Djibouti borders.
- Learn the north as a block. Tigray, Amhara and the disputed areas between
them.
- Finish in the south west. The four former Southern Nations regions are
small beside Oromia, and Gambela and Benishangul-Gumuz are on the Sudan and
South Sudan border.
