A Jordanian governorate narrows a round down to a slice of the country, and the
district is the tier that names a place. The districts are very unequal, from a
handful of square kilometres in the Jordan Valley hills to desert blocks bigger
than some governorates, so the map rewards learning the crowded north and west
before the empty east.

- Grouped by
- Governorate: all twelve, from Ajloun to Zarqa
- In the game
- 52 districts
What you are looking at
The districts (alwiya) of each governorate. A governorate holds between one
and nine, and the file draws Jerash as a single district. Names are given in
the transliteration the boundary data uses, so you will meet spellings such as
Al-Aqaba beside the Aqaba you may know.
The groups are the twelve governorates, so the game lets you drill them one at
a time. Each governorate answers under the same name in
Jordan Governorates.
How to place one
- Pick one governorate and learn it. Madaba has two districts, Ajloun two
and Jerash one, which makes them the shortest rounds to start on.
- Anchor on the capital. Amman is the district in the middle of the
populated west, with Sahab, Na'ur, Wadi al-Sayr and Al-Jizah around it.
- Read the Jordan Valley in a line. Al-Aghwar Shamaliyyeh, Dair Alla and
Shuna al-Jabiniyya run down the western edge.
- Treat the desert as the easy part. The districts of Ma'an, Mafraq and
Aqaba in the east are huge, and the hard part is the packed small ones in
Irbid.

Worked examples
AmmanThe capitalAmman is a district of its own, around the capital. It is in the middle of
the populated west, with Sahab, Na'ur and Wadi al-Sayr on its other sides.
HariemaThe smallest of themHariema is the smallest district on the map, a few square kilometres in the
north-west of Irbid. It is easy to miss because it sits against much larger
neighbours.
Ma'anThe biggest of themMa'an is the largest district by area, a wide block of southern desert that
runs to the Saudi border.
Frequently asked questions
How many districts does Jordan have?
The boundary data used here draws 52, across the 12 governorates. Some lists count 51 or leave out sub-districts, so a map from another source may differ.
Are the districts the same as the governorates?
No. The twelve governorates are the tier above, and each district belongs to exactly one of them. Those are the groups in this quiz.
Why are the spellings unfamiliar?
Arabic names have no single English spelling, and the quiz keeps the transliteration of its boundary data throughout so that the names match across the two games.
The tier above this one is Jordan Governorates. For
another Asian country at this level, see Sri Lanka Districts.
