A Malaysian state narrows a round down to a stretch of the peninsula or of
Borneo, and the district is the tier that names a place. There are 160 of them,
from the single district that makes up Perlis to the forty that divide Sarawak,
and the largest are bigger than some of the peninsula's states.
The tier below the states. These are the districts (daerah) of the peninsula,
and the districts and sub-districts of Sabah and Sarawak, which between them
account for 67 of the 160. Penang is divided into the two districts of
the island and the three of the mainland strip, Seberang Perai.
Three federal territories are answers in their own right: Kuala Lumpur, Labuan
and Putrajaya. The boundary file has no district for Putrajaya and draws it
inside Sepang, so this map cuts it out and gives it a shape of its own, which is
why Sepang has a bite taken from it. Kuala Lumpur and Labuan are single districts, as is
the state of Perlis, and each answers under the same name in
Malaysia States.
Many of the districts of the Klang valley, Penang and Johor are too small to tap
comfortably at the scale of the whole country. The smallest of each cluster has
its tap area widened beyond its shape; zoom in for the rest. A name that is
written with two spellings in the source is given the first: Nabawan.
The map is drawn where the country is, so the frame is wide: the peninsula is on
the left and Borneo on the right, with the sea between them.
