A Taiwanese county narrows a round down to a stretch of one coast, and the township is the tier that names a place. These are the districts of the big cities and the townships, towns and small cities of the counties, 368 of them, from the twelve districts of Taipei to the mountain townships that are larger than the capital many times over.
The map has everything below the counties. In a special municipality or a provincial city the answers are its districts, and in a county they are its townships, towns and county-administered cities. Taiwan treats them as one tier and so does this game: a district of Taipei and a mountain township in Nantou are the same kind of answer.
A name alone does not always identify one. East District, West District, North District and South District turn up in several cities, and Zhongshan, Xinyi, Zhongzheng and Dongshi each name two or three unrelated places, so the repeated names carry their county in brackets: East District (Tainan), Xinyi (Keelung). Taoyuan is the one that is both a city and a district of itself, and a second Taoyuan lies up in the mountains of Kaohsiung.
Names are drawn without their suffix (Banqiao rather than Banqiao District, Pitou rather than Pitou Township), because the quiz is not asking which of the three it is. The romanisation is Hanyu Pinyin, except in Kaohsiung and Tainan, which keep the Tongyong spellings those city governments use on their own signs: Fongshan, Siaogang, Sinhua.
Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu are on the map where they are, in the west, north west and middle of the strait, so the frame is wider than the island itself. Cijin is drawn as the narrow island off the coast of Kaohsiung that it is. Pratas and Taiping, which Kaohsiung administers and which lie hundreds of kilometres away, are left off so that the rest of the map can be drawn larger.
Many of the districts are too small to tap comfortably on a phone at the scale of the whole island. The smallest of each cluster has its tap area widened beyond its shape, which is how the crowded districts of Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung stay answerable; zoom in for the rest.
Orchid Island, known locally as Lanyu, is a township of Taitung County about 60 kilometres off the south east coast. It is the only township with no land border and no neighbour on the island, so once you know where it is there is nothing to confuse it with.
East District means exactly that, so any city with a centre has one. This is Tainan's, east of the old city, and the bracket in its name is what separates it from the three others.
Wuqiu is part of Kinmen County, but it is a pair of small islands far to the north east of Kinmen itself, nearer the Chinese coast than to the rest of its county. It is on the map where it is, so the Kinmen answers are not all in the same place.
368 townships and districts below the 22 counties and cities. The count is the same whether they are called townships (xiang), towns (zhen), county-administered cities (shi) or districts (qu), since they are one tier.
A district is a division of a city, whether a special municipality or a provincial city. A township is a division of a county. They are the same level of government and are all answers here.
Because the name alone would not say which place it is. Zhongshan is a district of Taipei and of Keelung, and East District is in four cities. The bracket is the county.
Kinmen and the Matsu Islands are administered by Taiwan but lie just off the coast of Fujian, so the map is wider than the island itself in order to include them.
