The Philippines has 18 regions, and a good deal of what is printed still shows
17. The Negros Island Region was created in 2024 out of three provinces that had
belonged to two other regions, which makes it the newest line on the map. This
page is all of them, grouped by island group the way the game groups them, and
what tells you which one you are in.

What you are looking at
A region is an administrative grouping of provinces, not a government: it has
no elected governor or legislature, but it is how national agencies organise
themselves, how regional offices are addressed, and how Filipinos say where they
are from. Most regions are known by a Roman numeral as well as a name, and the
numerals are worth learning because they appear on government signage and
plates. Two are different in kind. Metro Manila is the capital region, made of
cities and one municipality rather than provinces. The Bangsamoro region in the
south is autonomous, with its own parliament, and replaced the older Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao in 2019.
The number that matters is 18. Three changes explain most of the confusion
over it:
- Negros Island Region took Negros Occidental out of Western Visayas and
Negros Oriental and Siquijor out of Central Visayas in 2024, so the island of
Negros is no longer split between two regions.
- Bangsamoro is the 2019 successor to the Muslim Mindanao autonomous region,
with the same island provinces and Cotabato City.
- Caraga is the region in the northeast of Mindanao that older maps label
with its number alone.
How to place one
- Get the island group first. Luzon is the large northern island and the
ones around it, Mindanao the large southern one, and the Visayas the cluster
of islands between them. The three groups are what the game switches on and
off.
- Read the compass or the landform. Central, Eastern, Western and Northern
do most of the work inside a group, and Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera and the
Zamboanga Peninsula name the landform they are.
- Learn the acronyms as places. Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Soccsksargen are
made of the first letters of their provinces, which is a decent way to
remember what is inside them: Calabarzon is the ring south and east of
Manila, Mimaropa the islands of Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan, and
Soccsksargen the southwest of Mindanao around Cotabato.
- Then use size. Metro Manila is a speck on the shore of Manila Bay, and
Negros Island is a single island about the size of a province. The rest are
large.
Every region, by island group
- Luzon8 regions
- Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol, Cordillera, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Metro Manila
- Visayas4 regions
- Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Negros Island
- Mindanao6 regions
- Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen, Caraga, Bangsamoro
Each group can be switched on and off on its own in the start dialog. The Visayas
are the one most players have to relearn, since two of their four regions changed
shape in 2024.
Worked examples
Negros IslandThe newest regionNegros Island Region, the west half of the middle of the Visayas. It joins the
island of Negros with Siquijor off its southern tip, and the map shows it as
the one region that is nearly all a single island between Panay and Cebu.
Metro ManilaThe capital, and a speckMetro Manila: the national capital region, on the shore of Manila Bay and the
smallest region on the map by a wide margin. It is a few pixels across with the
whole archipelago in view, so it has a tap area to be clickable at all.
Frequently asked questions
How many regions does the Philippines have?
18, since the Negros Island Region was created in 2024. Before that there were 17, and many maps and lists still show that number.
What is the Negros Island Region?
A region created in 2024 from Negros Occidental, which had been in Western Visayas, and Negros Oriental and Siquijor, which had been in Central Visayas. It puts the whole island of Negros in one region.
What is the difference between a region and a province in the Philippines?
A province has an elected governor and a legislature and is the first tier of local government. A region is a grouping of provinces used by national agencies, with no government of its own, except the Bangsamoro region, which is autonomous.
What are the three island groups of the Philippines?
Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the middle and Mindanao in the south. They are geography rather than administration, but they are how the country is described and how this game groups its regions.
Why are Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Soccsksargen named like that?
Each is an acronym built from the provinces it was first made of. The names stayed even where the membership has since changed.
