Indonesia has 38 provinces, and most maps of it still show 34. Four new ones
were created on the island of New Guinea in 2022, which is recent enough that
a great deal of what is printed, taught and drawn is the older map. This page
is all of them, grouped by island the way the game groups them, and what tells
you which one you are in.

What you are looking at
A provinsi is the top tier of Indonesian government. Each has an elected
governor and a provincial legislature, and below it sit the kabupaten and kota,
regencies and cities, which run most of what people deal with day to day. Two
of the 38 are not ordinary provinces. Jakarta is a special capital region,
written DKI Jakarta, and Yogyakarta is a special region, written DI Yogyakarta,
because its sultan is its hereditary governor. Aceh has its own special
autonomy too, with sharia courts alongside the national ones.
The number that matters is 38. For a decade Indonesia had 34. In 2022 the
parliament split Papua into four more, in three steps over a year:
- Papua Selatan, South Papua, took the south coast and the border with Papua
New Guinea, around Merauke.
- Papua Tengah, Central Papua, took the middle of the island, around the
Mimika coast and the Paniai lakes.
- Papua Pegunungan, Highland Papua, took the interior around Wamena, the
one province with no coast at all.
- Papua Barat Daya, Southwest Papua, took the Bird's Head around Sorong
out of Papua Barat.
What is left of Papua is the north coast and its hinterland around Jayapura. A
map without Papua Pegunungan on it is a map from before 2022.
How to place one
- Get the island first. The seven groups this game uses are how the map is
taught and how it is talked about: Sumatra, Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara,
Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua. They are the same seven the regencies
game uses, so the two games are learned together.
- Read the compass word. Utara is north, Selatan south, Barat west, Timur
east and Tengah central. Almost every province that is not named for an island
is an island plus a direction, and once you know where Kalimantan or Sulawesi
is, the direction puts you inside the right one.
- Read the landform word. Kepulauan means islands, which is the whole
territory of two provinces: Kepulauan Riau, strewn over the sea between
Sumatra and Singapore, and Bangka Belitung, the pair of tin islands off the
east coast of Sumatra.
- Then use size. Java is small and holds six provinces, so a Javanese answer
is a click into a crowd. Papua and Kalimantan are the opposite: large and
mostly empty.
The traps are in the names. Papua Barat is not the whole west of the
island. It is the eastern half of the Bird's Head and the coast below it,
around Manokwari, with Papua Barat Daya cut from its western end around Sorong,
and Papua itself is now only the north coast. Sumatera Barat is West
Sumatra, a coastal province around Padang, while Jawa Barat is West Java,
the most populous province in the country, and the two are as far apart as the
names are alike. Riau and Kepulauan Riau are neighbours on the same strait:
Riau is the mainland coast of Sumatra, and Kepulauan Riau is the islands off it.
Every province, by island
- Sumatra10 provinces
- Aceh, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Jambi, Kepulauan Riau, Lampung, Riau, Sumatera Barat, Sumatera Selatan, Sumatera Utara
- Java6 provinces
- Banten, Jawa Barat, Jawa Timur, DKI Jakarta, Jawa Tengah, DI Yogyakarta
- Kalimantan5 provinces
- Kalimantan Barat, Kalimantan Timur, Kalimantan Selatan, Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Utara
- Sulawesi6 provinces
- Gorontalo, Sulawesi Utara, Sulawesi Tenggara, Sulawesi Selatan, Sulawesi Barat, Sulawesi Tengah
- Bali and Nusa Tenggara3 provinces
- Bali, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Nusa Tenggara Timur
- Maluku2 provinces
- Maluku, Maluku Utara
- Papua6 provinces
- Papua, Papua Barat, Papua Barat Daya, Papua Pegunungan, Papua Selatan, Papua Tengah
Each group can be switched on and off on its own in the start dialog. Java and
Bali and Nusa Tenggara are an evening each. Papua is the one most players have
to relearn, since three of its six provinces are younger than most of the maps
they learned it from.
Worked examples
Papua PegununganThe one with no coastPapua Pegunungan, the highlands province, around Wamena and the Baliem Valley.
It is the only Indonesian province with no sea on it, which on this map makes
it the block in the middle of New Guinea surrounded by its new siblings, and
it is the answer to most questions about the interior of the island.
DKI JakartaThe capital, and a speckDKI Jakarta: the capital region, on the north coast of Java, and the smallest
province on the map by a wide margin. It is a few pixels across with the whole
archipelago in view, so it has a tap area to be clickable at all, and it sits
inside Banten and West Java, which both reach the sea on either side of it.
Kepulauan RiauA province made of seaKepulauan Riau: over a hundred inhabited and uninhabited islands between
Sumatra, Borneo and Singapore, with Batam and Bintan the two that matter. Its
land is a small fraction of a province that covers most of the South China Sea
approaches, so the game draws only the islands and gives them a tap area.
Frequently asked questions
How many provinces does Indonesia have?
38, since November 2022. Indonesia had 34 for about a decade before that. Papua was split into Papua, Papua Tengah, Papua Pegunungan and Papua Selatan, and Papua Barat was split to make Papua Barat Daya, all in 2022.
What are the newest provinces of Indonesia?
Papua Selatan, Papua Tengah and Papua Pegunungan were established in June 2022, and Papua Barat Daya followed in November of the same year. All four are on the island of New Guinea.
Which Indonesian province is the largest, and which the smallest?
By land, Kalimantan Tengah is the largest, with Kalimantan Barat, Kalimantan Timur and Papua Selatan next. The smallest is DKI Jakarta, then Yogyakarta and Bali. By population West Java is the largest by a wide margin, with more people than most countries.
What is the difference between a province and a regency in Indonesia?
A province is the top tier, run by a governor. A kabupaten, regency, or kota, city, is the tier below it, run by a bupati or a wali kota. Every province is made up of regencies and cities, and the regencies are the level that does most of the day to day governing.
Why are Jakarta and Yogyakarta called special regions?
Jakarta is the national capital, so it is run as a special capital region, DKI Jakarta, rather than as an ordinary province. Yogyakarta kept its sultanate when Indonesia became independent, and the sultan is the hereditary governor of the special region, DI Yogyakarta, which is the only province governed that way.
Which Indonesian provinces are easiest to confuse?
Riau and Kepulauan Riau, which share a name and a strait, and the three Papuan names that start with Papua and differ only by a word. West Sumatra and West Java also get swapped by players who read the compass word and forget the island.
