A South Korean province narrows a round down to a corner of the peninsula, and the district is the tier that names a place. These are the si (cities), gun (counties) and gu (the districts of the big cities) that run the local roads, schools and signs: 229 of them, from the 25 gu that make up Seoul to the mountain counties of Gangwon that are far larger than the capital.
The map has every city, county and district below the provinces. Seven of the provincial units are divided into gu: Seoul, and the six metropolitan cities of Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Gwangju, Daejeon and Ulsan. Sejong, the planned administrative capital, is a province with a single district, so it is both.
The eleven largest cities of the provinces are divided into general districts of their own (Suwon has four, Changwon five). Those are administrative conveniences rather than the unit anybody names a town by, so each city is one answer here, with its districts folded back in.
A name is not enough to identify a gu. Jung-gu, Dong-gu, Seo-gu, Nam-gu and Buk-gu each turn up in several cities, and Jung-gu is in six of them, so the repeated names carry their province in brackets: Jung-gu (Busan), Jung-gu (Seoul). Goseong-gun is the same trap at county scale, once in Gangwon on the northern border and once on the south coast.
Ulleung-gun is the island county in the Sea of Japan, drawn as its main islands. Dokdo, the rocks 90 kilometres further east, is left off the map so that it does not shrink everything else to make room.
Many of the districts are too small to tap comfortably on a phone at the scale of the whole country. The smallest of each cluster has its tap area widened beyond its shape, which is how the crowded gu of Seoul and the metropolitan cities stay answerable; zoom in for the rest.
Every name can also be shown in Hangul: switch on the local name in the start dialog. Repeated names carry the short province name in brackets there too, as in 중구 (서울).
Ulleung-gun is an island county in the Sea of Japan, about 130 kilometres off the east coast. It is the only district with no land border and no neighbour, so once you know where it is there is nothing to confuse it with.
Sejong was built from scratch in the 2000s as an administrative capital, and was cut out of South Chungcheong in 2012. It is a province and a single district at once, a compact shape just north of Daejeon.
Jung-gu means the central district, so every metropolitan city has one. This is Seoul's, around the old city and the river, and the bracket in its name is what separates it from the five others.
Around 226 local governments: the cities, counties and gu below the provinces. This map draws 229, because it keeps Sejong as a district of its own and counts a city once rather than as its general districts.
A si is a city, a gun is a county, and a gu is a district inside a metropolitan city or Seoul. They are the same tier of government and are all answers here.
Gunwi was in North Gyeongsang until July 2023, when it was transferred to Daegu. The map draws it in Daegu.
It is part of Ulleung-gun in Korea's administration, but the rocks lie about 90 kilometres east of Ulleung itself. The map leaves them off so the rest of the country can be drawn larger.
