Mongolia is the most thinly peopled country on Earth, a plateau of steppe,
desert and mountain between Russia and China, and a province there can be
larger than a European country. The provinces are the way anyone in Mongolia
says where something is.

What you are looking at
The first tier of Mongolia: 21 provinces, each called an aimag, and the capital
Ulaanbaatar, which is a municipality of its own and counted as a province here.
The provinces are named for a mountain, a river or a people, and the group of
words that recur (Gobi, Khangai, Altai) tell you where the province sits.
The capital and the two smallest provinces, Darkhan-Uul and Orkhon, are specks
beside the rest, and the game gives them tap areas. Ulaanbaatar and Orkhon each
have a neighbour that surrounds most of them.
The groups are the four economic regions Mongolian geography is taught in. They
are a teaching convention rather than an administrative level, and the capital
is counted with the central region. The provinces are the
Mongolia Sums grouped, so the borders of the two maps match
exactly.
How to place one
- Start in the west. Bayan-Ölgii, Uvs, Khovd, Zavkhan and Govi-Altai fill
the Altai side of the country.
- Find the Khangai. The mountains give their name to Arkhangai,
Övörkhangai and Bayankhongor, with Khövsgöl and Bulgan to the north.
- Read the south as the Gobi. Ömnögovi, Dornogovi, Dundgovi and Govisümber
share the desert.
- Take the east last. Dornod, Khentii and Sükhbaatar are one block of
grassland, ending at the Chinese border.

Worked examples
ÖmnögoviThe biggest of themÖmnögovi, the South Gobi, is the largest province, a desert on the Chinese
border with the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan mountains in it.
OrkhonThe smallest of themOrkhon was cut from Bulgan in 1994 around the mining city of Erdenet. It is
smaller than many sums, so the game gives it a tap area.
UlaanbaatarThe capital inside a provinceUlaanbaatar is a municipality rather than a province, and Töv wraps round it.
Nearly half of the country lives in it.
