The county (gun) is the tier below North Korea's provinces, and the cities and
city districts sit beside the counties at the same level. This quiz draws the
whole country in them, from the large mountain counties of Ryanggang and Jagang
to the tiny districts of the ports and the capital. There is no street-level
coverage to train on, so it is a map quiz on its own terms.
The 179 counties, cities and districts of the boundary file. That is fewer than
the country has: Pyongyang alone has 19 districts and counties, and the file
folds them into three features, so the capital is answered by Pyongyang itself
and the two features that sit beside it. Names follow the file, which spells
them in the usual Latin transliteration, so a name may look different from the
spelling in an atlas (Phyongsan for Pyongsan, Thongchon for Tongchon).
Two counties are named Unsan, one in North Pyongan and one in South Pyongan, so
the quiz gives each its province in brackets. The counties are grouped by the
eleven units the file draws, which keeps Rason with North Hamgyong and Kaesong
with North Hwanghae; the North Korea Provinces quiz
makes both cities of their own.
The counties are fairly even, none larger than about two thousand square
kilometres, but the very small ones are in the ports and the cities: Kumho and
Chongnam are only a few square kilometres, and zooming in is the way to reach
them.
