Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of about 170 islands spread over roughly 800
kilometres of the South Pacific, east of Fiji. The map is worth knowing on its
own terms: five divisions cover the whole chain, and each is an archipelago in
its own right, so the quiz is less about borders than about which cluster of
islands a name belongs to.

- The south, and the central and northern islands
- In the game
- 5 divisions
What you are looking at
Tonga's five divisions, which together cover every island in the kingdom. The
largest island, Tongatapu, is in the south and holds the capital Nuku'alofa.
Its neighbour 'Eua is a single raised island to the south east. Ha'apai is a
long scatter of low coral islands in the middle of the chain, Vava'u a tight
cluster of islands around a sheltered sound further north, and the Niuas are
three distant islands almost at the latitude of Samoa.
The groups are not an official classification. They are the south and the rest
of the chain, and a way to learn the map a piece at a time.
How to place one
- Read the chain from south to north. Tongatapu and 'Eua, then Ha'apai,
then Vava'u, then the Niuas, each separated from the next by open sea.
- Pick out 'Eua first. It is one island, and the only division that is.
- Remember that the Niuas are far off. They sit well north of Vava'u and
are the easiest to forget when scanning along the chain.

Worked examples
TongatapuThe southTongatapu is the biggest island and the political centre, with the capital on
its north coast. The division also takes in the reefs and islets around it.
'EuaThe single island'Eua lies a short way south east of Tongatapu. It is one island rather than an
archipelago, and the only division you can find by its outline alone.
NiuasThe far northThe Niuas are three islands far to the north of the rest of the kingdom, and
they share a division because they are too distant to belong to any other.
Frequently asked questions
How many divisions does Tonga have?
Five: Tongatapu, 'Eua, Ha'apai, Vava'u and the Niuas.
Why is the map mostly sea?
Each division is an archipelago, so its outline is a handful of small islands spread over a wide area of ocean.
Does Tonga group its divisions?
Not in a way this game uses. The groups are the south and the central and northern islands, and they will not match every list you find.
