A Belgian province narrows a round down to a stretch of the country, and the
arrondissement is the tier that names a town. There are 43 of them, from the
single one that is Brussels to the eight that make up West Flanders, and each is
named for the town at its centre.

What you are looking at
The administrative arrondissements, which are the tier between a province and a
municipality: the one that a court, a prosecutor and a district commissioner
share. Brussels-Capital is a province-level unit of a single arrondissement, so
it is its own group.
Names are written the way the place is, in Dutch in Flanders and in French in
Wallonia, with the English name for the three that have one: Antwerp, Ghent and
Bruges. Mouscron is the smallest arrondissement on the map and sits on the French
border in two pieces, so it has a tap area wider than its outline, and so does
Brussels-Capital. Verviers is the largest, because it includes the
German-speaking community in the east.
The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
Hainaut has the most arrondissements, seven, and Walloon Brabant and Brussels one
each. Each province answers under the same name in
Belgium Provinces.
How to place one
- Pick one province and learn it. West Flanders has eight and Walloon
Brabant only one, which makes them the shortest and longest rounds to start
on.
- Find the arrondissement beside its namesake. Halle-Vilvoorde wraps around
Brussels, Leuven is just east of it, and Nivelles is the whole of Walloon
Brabant.
- Follow the language line. Flemish names run along the north of the country
and French ones along the south, and the line between them crosses the
country east to west just south of Brussels.
- Read Luxembourg as a block. Its five arrondissements (Arlon, Virton,
Neufchâteau, Bastogne and Marche-en-Famenne) fill the south east.

Worked examples
MouscronThe smallest of themMouscron is a town on the French border, an arrondissement of a single
municipality, and the smallest on the map. It is in two pieces, which is why
it is hard to hit without the tap area.
VerviersThe biggest of themVerviers is the largest arrondissement and the easternmost, and it includes
the nine municipalities of the German-speaking Community, so it is the only one
where the road signs can be in German.
Brussels-CapitalThe capital that is its own arrondissementBrussels-Capital is a region, a province-level unit and one arrondissement all
at once, ringed by Halle-Vilvoorde. It answers under the same name in
Belgium Provinces.
Frequently asked questions
How many arrondissements does Belgium have?
43 administrative arrondissements. Brussels-Capital is one of them, and the judicial arrondissements, which are fewer, are a different map.
What is the difference between an arrondissement and a province?
A province is made up of arrondissements, which are made up of municipalities. The arrondissement has no government of its own, but it is the tier that appears in administrative addresses.
Why are the names in different languages?
Each arrondissement is named in the language of the place: Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia. Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges use their English names.
The tier above this one is Belgium Provinces. For another
country at this level, see Austria Districts.
