The district (qada) is the second tier of Lebanon, between the nine governorates
and the municipalities, and the unit the Lebanese give when they say where they
are from. There are 26 of them, counting Beirut, from the tiny districts of the
coast and the Matn to the long, empty ones of the north east.

What you are looking at
The districts of Lebanon. Most are named for their main town, so the name of a
town is usually the name of a district too. Several of the names have more than
one English spelling: this quiz uses Bsharri, Bint Jbeil, Marjayoun, Matn, Sidon
and Tyre.
The districts are very uneven. Beirut, Tripoli, Sidon and the Matn are small and
crowded along the coast, and Beirut is small enough that zooming in is the way to
reach it. At the other extreme, Baalbek, Akkar and Hermel in the north east are
far larger than the districts of the mountain.
The groups are the governorates, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
Each governorate answers under the same name in
Lebanon Governorates.
How to place one
- Pick one governorate and learn it. Akkar, Baalbek-Hermel and
Keserwan-Jbeil are the quickest: one or two districts each. North Lebanon has
six.
- Start with the north. North Lebanon packs Tripoli, Koura, Batroun, Zgharta,
Bsharri and Minieh-Dinnieh into a small corner below Akkar.
- Follow the coast. Akkar and Tripoli, then Batroun, Jbeil and Keserwan,
the Matn and Beirut, and Chouf, Sidon and Tyre in the south.
- Leave the inland for last. The Beqaa valley holds Zahle, West Beqaa and
Rachaya, and Nabatieh's four districts sit between it and the coast.

Worked examples
BeirutThe capital, on its ownBeirut is both a district and a governorate: the city itself, on a headland
into the sea. Almost all of the urban area around it lies in the Matn, Baabda
and Keserwan districts of Mount Lebanon.
BaalbekThe big one in the eastBaalbek is the largest district in the country, reaching from the Beqaa valley
to the Syrian border, and holds the Roman temples that give it its name.
AkkarThe top of the mapAkkar is the district in the far north, along the Syrian border, and the one
most often lost off the top of a map. It is also a governorate of its own.
Frequently asked questions
How many districts does Lebanon have?
26, counting Beirut, spread over the nine governorates.
Which governorate is each district in?
The quiz groups them by governorate, so you can drill one at a time. Each governorate is its own quiz as well.
Why do some districts look so large?
The map is drawn on the land the district administers, and the districts of the dry north east are large and thinly populated, while those of the coast and the mountain are small and crowded.
The tier above this one is Lebanon Governorates. For
another country at this level, see Sri Lanka Districts.
