The district is the second tier of Papua New Guinea, between the 22 provinces and the local-level governments, and the unit that elects each member of parliament. There are 87 of them, from the city districts of Lae, Rabaul and Port Moresby to the vast swamp of Middle Fly.
The districts of Papua New Guinea. Most carry the name of their main town or valley, and where a district is named for two places the quiz joins them with a hyphen: Aitape-Lumi, Ialibu-Pangia, Tari-Pori. The Highlands are crowded with these, since the provinces there are cut into many small districts around the valleys where people live, while the lowland provinces have a few very large ones.
The districts are very uneven. Lae, Rabaul, Mt Hagen and Goroka are towns with a district to themselves and are small enough to need a tap area on the map, so zooming in is the way to reach them. At the other extreme, Middle Fly, North Fly and South Fly in Western Province cover a huge area of swamp and forest.
