Sweden is a long country: Malmö and Kiruna are as far apart as Paris and
Warsaw, so knowing you are in Sweden tells you very little about where. The
county, or län, is the unit that fixes it. Each one has its own governor,
its own regional council running healthcare and public transport, and, for the
older ones, a letter on the number plate that was once its own. This page is the
whole list, grouped the way Swedes group them.

What you are looking at
A län is the tier between the state and the municipality. Each is run by a
länsstyrelse, the state's regional arm headed by a governor, and by a
directly elected region that owns the hospitals and the buses. Gotland is
the odd one out: its council is the municipality, so island and county are the
same shape and the same body.
Above the counties are the three lands, which have no government at all and
are older than all of them. Norrland is more than half of Sweden's area and holds
about one person in eight. Svealand is the middle, around Lake Mälaren and the
capital. Götaland is the south, including the two big islands Öland and Gotland
and the plains of Skåne. Learn the three and you have placed a county to within
a few hundred kilometres before you have read its name.
How to place one
- Get the land first. Norrland is the five long counties of the north,
with Gävleborg as the one that reaches furthest south. Svealand has seven
and Götaland nine.
- Read the name. Most counties are named for a province or the main town,
and the genitive "-s län" is dropped here. The compass words do real work:
Väster- is west, Öster- is east and Söder- is south, so Västernorrland,
Östergötland and Södermanland tell you which side of their neighbours they
sit on.
- Count outward from Stockholm. Uppsala is directly north, Södermanland
south-west, Västmanland and Örebro west, Östergötland south. The capital's
neighbours are the ones you meet first.
- Use the coast. The Baltic side from the north: Norrbotten, Västerbotten,
Västernorrland, Gävleborg, Uppsala, Stockholm, Södermanland, Östergötland,
Kalmar, Blekinge, Skåne. The Kattegat side from the south: Skåne, Halland,
Västra Götaland.

Worked examples
GotlandThe island that is a countyGotland sits alone in the Baltic, 90 kilometres off the mainland, and is the
only county that is a single municipality. It is also the easiest click on the
map: nothing else in the game is detached from the mainland by open sea.
NorrbottenThe biggest oneNorrbotten is about a quarter of Sweden by area, with Kiruna the largest
municipality in the country inside it. It borders Norway to the west and
Finland along the Torne river to the east, and it is the top of the map.
Västra GötalandThe one that was threeVästra Götaland was formed in 1998 from Göteborg and Bohus, Älvsborg and
Skaraborg counties, which is why it is the most populous county outside the
capital and holds 49 of the 290 municipalities, and why older maps show three
where this one shows one.
Frequently asked questions
How many counties does Sweden have?
21. That has been the count since 1997, when Skåne was formed from Malmöhus and Kristianstad counties, and Västra Götaland from three more the year after.
What is a Swedish county called?
A län (plural: län), and every name carries the word: Stockholms län, Skåne län. English usually writes the county's name alone, which is what this game asks for.
What are Norrland, Svealand and Götaland?
The three lands, the traditional parts of the country. They are not administrative divisions, but they are how Swedes describe where something is, and they are the groups this game is cut by.
Which county is the capital in?
Stockholm County, one of the smallest by area and by far the most populous. The city of Stockholm is one of its 26 municipalities.
Are the counties the same as the provinces?
No. The 25 historical provinces (landskap), such as Dalarna or Lappland, are cultural and carry no government. Counties often follow them but not exactly: Lappland is split between Norrbotten and Västerbotten, and Småland is spread over four.
The tier below this one is Sweden Municipalities, and
the 21 answers here are the 21 groups there, so it is the place to go once the
counties come easily. For another country at this level, see
Germany States and Netherlands Provinces.
