The arrondissement is the second tier of Haiti, between the ten departments and
the communes, and the level at which the state places its sub-prefects. There
are 42 of them, most named for the town that heads them, and many of the names
are worth learning as places in their own right: Cap-Haïtien and Jacmel on the
coast, Hinche in the Central Plateau, and Jérémie at the tip of the south-west.

What you are looking at
The 42 arrondissements of Haiti, the way the map is drawn today. They nest
exactly in the departments, which is how the groups are made: each is in the one
department that contains it, and each department answers under the same name in
Haiti Departments.
Port-au-Prince, the capital, is an arrondissement of its own and the smallest
pieces on the map are the ones around it, so on a phone the smaller ones carry a
tap area. La Gonâve, the island out in the Gulf of Gonâve, is an arrondissement
too, and is the one piece that is not joined to the mainland.
How to place one
- Pick one department and learn it. Grand'Anse, Nippes, Nord-Ouest and
Sud-Est have three arrondissements each and are the quickest to finish; Nord
has seven, the most of any.
- Start with the capital and its neighbours. Port-au-Prince is bordered by
Croix-des-Bouquets to the east, Léogâne to the west, and Arcahaie to the
north along the coast.
- Follow the north coast. From Môle-Saint-Nicolas in the west through
Port-de-Paix, Cap-Haïtien and Fort-Liberté to Ouanaminthe on the border.
- Finish on the southern peninsula. Jérémie and Anse d'Hainault are at the
far tip, and the south coast runs on through Les Cayes to Jacmel.
