Haiti is the western third of the island of Hispaniola, and its ten departments
are the first tier of the country, the level at which the state runs its
prefectures, its schools and its roads. A photo taken there is as likely to show
a steep terraced hillside, a mountain road or a crowded coastal town as anything
else, and which department you are in tells you most of what it will look like.

What you are looking at
The ten departments of Haiti, the way the map is drawn today. Nippes is the
youngest: it was split from Grand'Anse in 2003. Six are named for where they sit
on the compass, Nord, Nord-Est, Nord-Ouest, Ouest, Sud and Sud-Est, and the
others for a river or a district: Artibonite for the longest river in the
country, Centre for the middle of it, Grand'Anse for the bay at the south-west tip,
and Nippes for the small peninsula beside it.
Haiti has no tier between the departments and the country, so the quiz groups
them into the three parts of the country that Haitians themselves talk about.
The north is the three departments on that coast, the centre and the west is the
band from the Artibonite valley to Port-au-Prince, and the south is the long
peninsula that points at Jamaica. The groups are a way to drill the map a piece
at a time rather than an administrative tier. The departments are the
Haiti Arrondissements grouped, so the borders of the
two maps match exactly.
How to place one
- Start with the west. Ouest holds Port-au-Prince and the island of La
Gonâve, and sits at the head of the Gulf of Gonâve with the two peninsulas on
either side.
- Take the north as three. Nord-Ouest is the arm that reaches towards Cuba,
Nord is the middle of the north coast around Cap-Haïtien, and Nord-Est runs on
east to the border with the Dominican Republic.
- Find the middle. Artibonite is the large department on the coast north of
the gulf, and Centre is the one inland of it, on the border.
- Finish on the south peninsula. Nippes is the short neck, Grand'Anse is the
tip, Sud is the south coast and Sud-Est is the corner that borders the
Dominican Republic.

Worked examples
OuestThe capitalOuest is the department of Port-au-Prince. It is shaped by the Gulf of
Gonâve, and takes in the island of La Gonâve out in the gulf.
NippesThe youngestNippes is the small department on the neck of the southern peninsula, split
off from Grand'Anse in 2003. It is one of the easiest to lose between its
neighbours.
ArtiboniteThe big oneArtibonite is the largest department, and fills the coast north of the gulf
and the valley of the river it is named for.
