A Hungarian county narrows a round down to a stretch of the Danube or a corner
of the plain, and the district is the tier that names a town. The járás are what
the 2013 reform made the working units of the state, from the market town that
anchors each to the 23 districts of Budapest, which are the numbers on the
capital's street signs.
The 175 járás, which cover the country outside the capital, and the 23 kerület
of Budapest. A járás takes the name of its seat: Szeged, Pécs and Győr are
districts as well as cities. Budapest's are numbered in Roman numerals from I,
the Castle District on the Buda side, around the river to XXIII in the south,
and appear as Budapest I to Budapest XXIII.
The capital's districts are small, and several are too small to tap
comfortably at the scale of the whole country. The smallest of each cluster has
its tap area widened beyond its shape; zoom in for the rest.
Pest County is the largest block of districts after the capital, with 18 around
it. Baranya's Sásd district is named for its town here, though some sources
still call it Hegyhát after the microregion.
The groups are the seven statistical regions, so the game lets you drill them
one at a time. Each county answers under the same name in
Hungary Counties, which groups by the same regions.
