The district (distrito) is the second tier of Mozambique, between the eleven provinces and the administrative posts, and the unit most public services are run from. The quiz has 156 of them, from the single block of the capital to the huge empty districts of the far north.
The districts of Mozambique and the cities that stand apart from them, drawn as one map. The cities are named with a Cidade de prefix (Cidade de Maputo, Cidade da Beira, Cidade de Nampula and the other provincial capitals), and each is a small area of its own, inside or beside the district that surrounds it. They are there because a city is a unit of its own in Mozambique, and a quiz that left them out would leave holes in the map.
Two choices in the map are worth knowing. The two islands in Lake Niassa that the source draws, Likoma and Chizumulu, belong to Malawi and are left out. The lake itself is drawn as part of the Lago district, which is named for it and runs along the shore. Counts of districts you will find elsewhere (about 154, or a bit over 160 with the cities) differ for the same reason: they count the cities and some of the newer districts in different ways.
The districts are very uneven. The big ones are in the north and the interior: Mecula, Montepuez and Marrupa each cover well over fifteen thousand square kilometres. The small ones are on the coast and around the cities, and the islands off the north coast, Ibo and Ilha de Moçambique, are the smallest of all, small enough to be given a tap area on the map.
The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each province answers under the same name in Mozambique Provinces.
Mecula is the largest district, in the far north of Niassa, and holds most of the Niassa reserve. It is bigger than some small countries and has very few people.
Cidade de Maputo is the capital, at the southern tip of the country on the bay. It is its own province, so it is the only district in Maputo City, and a small target on any screen.
Lago is the district along the shore of Lake Niassa, and the map draws the Mozambican side of the lake as part of it. It is a strip that runs north to south on the border with Malawi.
The quiz draws 156 districts and cities, across the eleven provinces. Published counts vary with how the cities are counted.
Likoma and Chizumulu are islands in Lake Niassa that belong to Malawi, so they are not part of the Mozambican map.
The quiz groups them by province, so you can drill one province at a time. Each province is its own quiz as well.
