A Portuguese district is a stretch of a coast or a river valley, and the municipality is the unit that names a place: it is the concelho on a road sign, the one a town council governs, and the one the weather forecast is given in. There are 308 of them, and they run from the compact railway town of Entroncamento to the wide plains of the Alentejo.
The concelhos. Each is named for its main town, and most are the town and the countryside around it, so the name is usually the town you would drive to. Two names are used twice, because the country has two of each: there is a Lagoa in the Algarve and another on São Miguel in the Azores, and a Calheta on Madeira and another on São Jorge. They are told apart in brackets here.
Many of the municipalities are small. Around Lisbon and Porto they are suburbs that touch each other, so the smallest have a tap area wider than their outline, and zooming in is the way to reach the rest. In the north the municipalities are small and packed, and in the Alentejo they are large and few.
The Azores and Madeira are drawn in the sea beside the mainland, behind a dashed rule, at their true size. The Azores' nineteen municipalities are spread over nine islands, so most islands have more than one and the small ones (Corvo, Santa Cruz da Graciosa) have exactly one.
The groups are the districts, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. It opens on Lisbon, which has sixteen, so the first run is one district rather than the whole country. Each district answers under the same name in Portugal Districts.
São João da Madeira is a town of about 20,000 people on the edge of Aveiro's district, and the smallest municipality in Portugal by area. It has nothing to do with the island of Madeira, and is small enough to need a tap area on the map.
Odemira is the largest municipality in the country, on the Alentejo coast in the west of Beja's district. It runs from the Atlantic inland to the Algarve border.
Lagoa on São Miguel is the same name as the Lagoa in the Algarve, and the island one is the one in the brackets. If the question says Azores, it is the one to the west of the dashed rule.
308: 278 on the mainland, 19 in the Azores and 11 in Madeira. They are called concelhos or municípios, and the two words mean the same.
The freguesias beneath the municipalities number about 3,000 after the 2013 reform, which is more than a quiz can hold, so the game stops at the municipality.
Lagoa and Calheta are each the name of two municipalities, one on the mainland or Madeira and one in the Azores. The bracket says which.
The tier above this one is Portugal Districts. For another country at this level, see Spain Provinces.
