A Saudi region narrows a round down to a slice of the peninsula, and the governorate is the tier that names a place. They are very unequal: tiny districts packed into the mountains of Asir and Al Bahah, and desert blocks larger than some countries in the Eastern Province, so the map rewards learning the crowded south-west before the empty east.
The governorates (muhafazat) of each region, drawn from the boundary data rather than a government list, so the count differs from some official tallies, which also include sub-governorates called markaz. A region holds between four governorates, in Al Jawf and the Northern Borders, and twenty-three, in Riyadh. Names are given in the transliteration the data uses, so you will meet spellings such as Al Taif beside the Taif you may know.
The groups are the thirteen regions, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each region answers under the same name in Saudi Arabia Regions.
Riyadh is a governorate of its own, around the capital, in the middle of the region of the same name. Ad Diriyah, Al Kharj and Huraymila are on its other sides.
Bani Hasan is the smallest governorate on the map, about 130 square kilometres in the mountains of Al Bahah. It is easy to miss because it sits against much larger neighbours.
Al Ahsa is the largest governorate by area, a wide block of Eastern Province desert that runs from the oasis around Hofuf to the borders of Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
The boundary data used here draws 147, across the 13 regions. Official lists vary with how they count sub-governorates, so a map from another source may differ.
No. The 13 regions are the tier above, and each governorate belongs to exactly one of them. Those are the groups in this quiz.
Arabic names have no single English spelling, and the quiz keeps the transliteration of its boundary data throughout so that the names match across the two games.
The tier above this one is Saudi Arabia Regions. For another Asian country at this level, see Jordan Districts.
