The commune is the second tier of Burundi, below the five provinces and the unit
the government runs from schools to local roads. There are 42 of them on this
map, from Mukaza, the small commune that holds the centre of the largest city,
to Rumonge, which runs along the shore of Lake Tanganyika.

What you are looking at
The 42 communes of Burundi, as they sit in the five provinces drawn in 2025. The
provinces were merged from 18 older ones, and the communes were kept, so an older
map that shows more than five provinces still gets most of its communes right.
Many take the name of the town that heads them, so Gitega, Ngozi, Kayanza and
Muyinga are worth knowing as places as well.
The communes are uneven. Mukaza is by far the smallest, under fifty square
kilometres, and the game gives it a tap area. Rumonge, Nyanza and Musongati in
the south are the biggest, each over a thousand.
The groups are the provinces, so the game lets you drill them one at a time.
Each province answers under the same name in
Burundi Provinces.
How to place one
- Pick one province and learn it. Burunga and Buhumuza have seven each, the
fewest, and Bujumbura has eleven, the most.
- Start with the capital area. Mukaza and Ntahangwa are the two communes of
the city of Bujumbura, on the lake.
- Follow the lake. Rumonge, in the south west, runs down the Tanganyika shore.
- Read the north as a row. Kirundo, Ngozi and Kayanza run along the border
with Rwanda.

surroundings in the centre of the country, and the province is the larger block
