Sudan Localities

The locality is the second tier of Sudan, between the eighteen states and the administrative units, and the level most local news from the country is written at. The quiz counts the 189 that the boundary file draws, from the small localities of Khartoum to the very large ones of the Northern state.

What you are looking at

The localities of Sudan. Each state has between seven and twenty-one, apart from the Abyei Area, which is one. Many are named for their main town, so Kassala, Gedaref, Port Sudan and Sennar are both a town and the locality round it.

The sizes are very uneven. In the north and the east a locality can be the size of a European country and hold a handful of villages, while in Khartoum, Kassala and Gedaref the city localities are a few kilometres across. The quiz gives the smallest a tap area.

A few names repeat between states, and the file marks them with the state: Ar Rahad in Gedaref and in North Kordofan, As Salam in South Darfur and West Kordofan, Habila in South Kordofan and West Darfur, and At Tadamon in Blue Nile and South Kordofan. The quiz writes the state beside them. Abyei, in West Kordofan, is a locality of its own and is not the Abyei Area.

The groups are the states, so the game lets you drill them one at a time. Each state answers under the same name in Sudan States. With 189 localities, a first run opens on Khartoum alone.

How to place one

Pick one state and learn it. Khartoum, River Nile, Northern and Sennar have seven each and are the quickest to finish; South Darfur has twenty-one.
Start with the towns. Omdurman, Bahri, Khartoum, Port Sudan, Kassala, El Fasher and Nyala are anchors for the localities that surround them.
Follow the Nile. The River Nile and Northern localities sit on the river in a row, from Atbara to Dongola.
Use the mountains in the west. The Jebel Marra localities in Central Darfur cluster round the volcanic massif.
Leave the big empty ones for last. The desert localities in the north have few landmarks.

Um Durman is Omdurman, across the White Nile from Khartoum, and with Khartoum and Bahri one of the three cities that make up the capital.

The port

Port Sudan is the small locality on the Red Sea, and the country's main port. It is small on the map, so the quiz gives it a tap area.

Ar Rahad (Gedaref)
