Benin is a long, narrow country, about a hundred and twenty kilometres wide at the coast and nearly seven hundred from the sea to the Niger, and a round there is mostly a question of how far north you are: the crowded lagoons and palm plantations round Cotonou and Porto-Novo, the red-earth plateaux and hills of the centre, or the savannah, the Atacora mountains and the national parks of the north. These two quizzes cut the same map two ways: the 12 departments to learn first, and the 77 communes beneath them for when the departments stop being a challenge. The departments are grouped into the north, the centre and the south and the communes by department, so what you learn on one carries to the other.
